God What Have I Done??? – A Story from the Libyan Desert

It was a very hot summer in the Libyan Desert(close to the Tropic of Cancer), with temperature above 40 degrees Celcius.

I was transferred by the head office from Tripoli to Awjilah in NE of Lybia to cover the shortage of personnel at the camps in the desert where our employees were working at the oil rigs. Suddenly I was transformed from an Economist in a Camp Administrator. I had the chance to act like a Purchase Manager and to buy daily from Awjilah or Jalu food stuffs and equipment.

Buying food stuff daily from the shop located in Awjilah I became friend with a smiley shop assistant(in my humble opinion a natural born merchant) of Egyptian origin. He told me that in Egypt he has a large family with many brothers and sister and he must work to support them. As any human being he had a dream to study at the university but with the money he was earning he could hardly afford to live not to study. So I came with an idea: why not buy a PC and in this way to have virtual access to information and the University and Library of WWW for free.

One day my Egyptian friend informed me that the borrowed money from his boss to buy a PC but he need my assistance to do the purchase in order to chose the best option possible for the money.

One day we went from Awjilah to the main town in the area called Jalu we bought a PC and a small table for it.

Back in Awjilah I was invited in the house of my friend to install the PC. I had a big surprise to see an empty room with no piece of furniture and only some blankets laying on the floor. There was no bed to sleep but there was now a PC and a small table. It was like having the crown of Queen Elizabeth the 2nd but no Buckingham Palace to live in.

In my mind came the thought: GOD WHAT ON EARTH I HAVE DONE ??? It was my idea to buy a PC a good or a bad one.

I hope my Egyptian friend used the PC to learn and accomplish his dreams.

I hope I done a good thing and he is now a graduate and he has a great job to support his family.

May all your dreams come true my friend.
