My name is Romeo Milea, I am 45 years old, I am an Economist and Valuer and I have been afflicted with Rosacea for some time.

Rosacea is a facial disorder that affects over 45 million people in varying degrees of severity. Rosacea is often characterized by facial redness, flushing, burning pain, acne and even facial disfigurement. In some severe cases, the skin is hot to the touch and the person experiences burning or aching pain that can at times be completely disabling.

There is a non-profit organization, The Rosacea Research and Development Institute (RRDi), which is dedicated to increasing awareness, educating people and, most importantly, funding research for a treatment or cure for Rosacea hence the reason for my letter.

Repair Your Skin's Barrier To Treat Redness and Flushing: A healthy skin barrier prevents allergens and irritants from provoking rosacea symptoms.

A healthy skin barrier prevents water loss and allergens, irritants and chemicals from penetrating skin and causing many commonplace rosacea symptoms.

Disrupted skin barrier allows for the penetration of allergens, irritants and chemicals, provoking excessive free radical damage and worsening rosacea symptoms.

A disrupted skin barrier allows for problematic amounts of water to evaporate from skin, leading to dryness, and for irritants and allergens to penetrate the skin, provoking symptoms.

Dermatologists have found that rosacea patients who use barrier repair products (and not just moisturizers) for extended periods of time frequently regain a normal flush response.

Unlike moisturizers, which sit on the surface of the skin to prevent the evaporation of water, barrier repair products actively repair the skin, helping treat more fundamental causes of its tendency to be dry, irritated and reactive.

A moisturised skin barrier — skin is more hydrated, but still very vulnerable to allergens, irritants and general environmental factors which worsen rosacea.

A healthy, functional skin barrier does more than prevent water loss, it also shields the skin from allergens and irritants.

Frequently patients experience irritation from numerous sources, such as the climate (particularly if dry and cold) and cosmetics.

Many ingredients in skin care products are not intended to be substantially absorbed into the skin. However if the skin’s barrier is impaired they can affect the skin in untoward ways by reaching deeper into it than intended, producing redness, irritation, stinging, itching and prickling sensations.

If your skin’s barrier is extremely unhealthy, even water can be irritating.

Rather than trying endless moisturizers for your skin’s irritation you should make an effort to repair the fundamental deficiencies it has developed.

Vital Components of the Skin Barrier

Skin is made up of proteins protected by a mixture of oils comprising approximately 50% ceramides, 25%cholesterol and 15% fatty acids.

Changes to any of these components, either in quantity or quality, can lead to faulty skin barrier function.

Skin irritation from many sources, including the process of flushing, exposure to daylight, the hormonal influence of stress and inferior facial cleansers, are known to alter the properties of the skin barrier.

Consequences for Blood Vessel Reactivity

Skin irritation is accompanied by an increase in blood flow, which in rosacea quickly becomes pathological and leads to persistent redness and visible capillaries.

By improving the skin barrier the likelihood of skin irritation is decreased and so follows less of the blood vessel reactivity which leads to harmful episodes of flushing.

Ingredients Which Harm/Degrade The Skin Barrier

Skin care products for acne and aging skin concerns are replete with ingredients which (either in small quantities or if misused) can abuse the skin’s barrier.

Prime examples are alcohol, benzoyl peroxide, essential oils and several exfoliating acids such as glycolic acid.

Alkaline products, particularly soaps but also many cleansers and some moisturizers, inhibit activities in the skin which produce natural ceramides.

Sulfates, such as sodium laureth sulphate, and other surfactants and detergents found in many cleansers, actively remove ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids from the skin.

While this may be passable for someone with very oily skin, all skin types and conditions, and particularly patients with rosacea, can benefit greatly by avoiding these ingredients.

Ingredients Which Repair The Skin Barrier

Combinations of ceramides, fatty acids, cholesterol, natural occlusives (such as grape seed and squalene) and humectants (such as glycerin, sodium hyaluronate/hyaluronic acid) in products such as Epiceram are effective at restoring healthy skin barrier function.

Beta glucan and centella asiatica help accelerate the restoration of the skin’s barrier by the above ingredients.

Testing Products for Irritancy In Rosacea Patients

The reaction of blood vessels in response to skin care products can be measured via laser doppler velocimetry(LDV) and photoplethysmography (PPG).

When synchronized with the pulse rate, these instruments measure changes in the skin’s vasculature.

They also help detect irritation which doesn’t produce immediate visible redness but which may be cumulatively harmful. This is known as sub-clinical inflammation.

Used in conjunction with other methods LDV and PPG help confirm the suitability of both the individual constituents and the final formulae of the Clinic’s products.

Summary of What To Do

First, avoid removing the essential components of the skin barrier by avoiding cleansers which are alkaline(those which have a pH above 7) or contain sulphates. For the most part this mandates avoiding soaps.

If possible, use a skin-supporting cleanser which contains ceramides to protect the skin during cleansing. TheRosacea Anti-Inflammatory Foaming Cleanser is an example of such a product.

Second, avoid exfoliating acids and drying treatments such as benzoyl peroxide, at least until your skin has recovered (this will take months and allow a year of barrier repair techniques to see a durable change in your skin’s reactivity and sensitivity).

Use effective, tested barrier repair products, such as Rosacea Treatment Fluid and Rosacea Treatment Creamwhich have demonstrated efficacy on rosacea patients.

Ten Ways to Dodge Your Dermatologist

While in college, a friend of mind went to a dermatologist because he had a slight rash. The specialist told him it was dermatitis and issued him a nifty cream to put on it. The visit cost my friend half a weeks pay, and when he came to realize that dermatitis meant itchy skin, he went ballistic. You might be able to save some space in your checkbook, and maybe even some time in the waiting room, with a few of these ideas:

Shampoo less often.  If you are troubled by simple but annoying scalp conditions, this is really worth a try before you drop the big bucks on a doctor. A physician I go to for once-a-decade physicals prescribed not one but TWO antibiotics (one topical, one oral) for a chronic scalp irritation.  He also recommended a very expensive shampoo and said to use it often. Nuts to that; the condition went away when I simply stopped shampooing every day and went to just once a week.

Use less soap. Not none, but less! I am not suggesting that you become the poster person for vagrancy; just use less of what everybody knows dries out skin. You use soaps and detergents to dissolve grease and oil when you wash your clothes and clean your dishes. We all know that soaps and detergents cut grease. Right! They do the same to your skin, removing the natural moisture, oils and softness that no product can truly replace. A naturopath once told me that one should shower without soap, except for judicious application to personal areas that really need it.

Do not trust sun block. To avoid sunburn, wear loose, cool, comfy clothes instead. Simple, no?  You’d be genuinely surprised just how many people still do not realize that the ozone layer is not what it was thirty years ago.  More ultraviolet light (UV-B in particular) does in fact now reach us than it did a generation or two ago. You can avoid practically all basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, the two most common types of skin cancer, simply by putting on some clothes. I like a nice tan as much as the next person, but you simply have to use common sense here. Look: if you were diagnosed even with relatively easy-to-cut-out skin cancer, wouldn’t you do just anything to be able to go back and prevent it?  Even wear a hat and a shady shirt?  Well, now is the time to start.

Switch to more natural perfumes, soaps and deodorants. For this, you may need to stop by your local health food store. There really are many more natural, much more gentle alternatives to the cheap, caustic, common cosmetic chemicals that contribute to creams and other commercial creations’ irritation of our skin! (Has the Pulitzer Prize in Alliteration been awarded yet?)  I know two people who used to have numerous, small polyp-like growths on their neck and underarms.  These were no more than slightly unsightly, yet they were hardly an improvement to the basic birthday suit.  In each case, they went away when the one person stopped using anti-perspirant deodorants, and in the other case when the woman stopped putting perfume directly on her skin.  Read the label; even some “natural” deodorants are not that natural.  However, most are a big improvement for a small cash difference.

Build skin health from the inside out. To have healthy skin, grow it. Your skin is an organ, not exactly like your lungs or heart, but a lot more visible, and a lot bigger, too.  Your skin is, in fact, your body’s largest organ. Eat more fiber; try a near-vegetarian diet; and how about a few days juice fasting?  See for yourself if a healthy inside equals a healthy outside.

CHOCOLATE: Stop eating it.  It is no myth but a matter of observable fact that if you eat a good bit of chocolate, your skin will break out. If you cut out the chocolate, your skin will likely improve. Part of this is due to dietary fat; part is due to chocolate itself. Try and see.  Hershey’s common stock will do well without your help.

Use less skin and hair glop. You’ll save a pile of cash, and if you follow the suggestions above, you won’t need all that the stuff anyway. I remember a neat Nancy cartoon where she bathed and showered and dried her hair, then covered it with all the sprays, gels, mousses and what have you. She looked in a mirror, realized how yucky her chemical hair was, and went back into the tub to wash it off all over again. Okay, it wasn’t the most hilarious cartoon I’ve ever seen (that, of course, would be the Far Side take on the real reason dinosaurs became extinct). But the point was made nonetheless.

Take your vitamins. Your skin loves vitamin E (internally and externally), the B-complex vitamins, and assorted other nutrients that modern diets so often lack.

Eat more lecithin.  Lecithin contains linoleic and linolenic acid, the absolutely essential fractions of dietary fat. As adult Americans try to reduce their fat intake (generally a good idea), no one has told them that they may thereby be creating a fatty acid deficiency. Since the US government and most dietitians just cannot own up to the necessity of food supplements, we had better consider them ourselves. The irritable-skin, dry-skin, broken-skin consequences of long-term linoleic and especially linolenic acid deficiency are probably very common. I eliminated my own psoriasis-like skin problem with just a few days supplementation of three tablespoons of lecithin per day. A few TBL per week keeps it away.  No dermatologist needed.

Reduce stress.  A personal observation: I was under high stress at one job for about four years, and I noticed four things: 1) my hair got gray; 2) my hair started to come out in the comb; 3) when I started taking more vitamins, the hair stopped coming out; and 4) when I started doing the work I love, my hair stopped graying.  In my opinion, I am less gray than I was in 1989. You can look at my untouched photo on this websites main page, marvel at my toupee, guess my age, and email me your answer. The winner will receive absolutely nothing. I am kidding about the toupee; it’s all natural.



Rosacea and Mirvaso Pros and Cons

Rosacea is a common condition characterized by transient or persistent central facial erythema, visible blood vessels, and often papules and pustules. Because the facial skin is the predominant site of involvement, many patients sense that rosacea alters their social and professional interactions, leading to problems on the job, in their marriage, or in meeting new people.

The expert committee stated that the diagnosis of rosacea requires the presence of one or more of the following primary features concentrated on the convex areas of the face: flushing (transient erythema), nontransient erythema, papules and pustules, and telangiectasia.


1. Erythematotelangiectatic type (ETR)
The flushing that rosacea patients experience is prolonged. Many people without rosacea experience evanescent flushing in response to embarrassment, exercise, or hot environments. The flushing of
rosacea, however, is not the evanescent several seconds to fewminutes of pinkness that is commonly experienced. Usually rosacea patients describe their flushing to last longer than 10 minutes. Such a prolonged vasomotor reaction may help in differentiating physiologic flushing from that seen in rosacea
patients. The central portion of the face is generally the site of the most intense color,9 but the redness
may also involve the peripheral portion of the face,

2. Papulopustular rosacea (PPR)
Patients with PPR (also known as classic rosacea, pink papular rosacea, and typologic center disease) present with a strikingly red central portion of the face but have persistent or episodic inflammation characterized by small papules that may be surmounted by pinpoint pustules. Edema may accompany such episodes but is frequently subtle in its expression. There is almost universal sparing of the periocular skin, which contrasts strikingly with the intense redness at adjacent sites. A history of flushing is often present; however, this symptom is usually milder than that experienced in patients with ETR. Irritation from external stimuli is also not as constant a feature; thus scaling and roughness are often absent. These patients are most often women in midlife.Telangiectases are often subtly present but may be obscured by the generally erythematous background.

3. Phymatous rosacea
The expert committee designated phymatous rosacea as one of the 4 rosacea subtypes.1 Phymata include marked skin thickening and irregular surface nodularities, and can occur on the nose (rhinophyma), chin (gnathophyma), forehead (metophyma), one or both ears (otophyma), and eyelids (blepharophyma). Four variants of rhinophyma (glandular, fibrous, fibroangiomatous,
actinic) can be recognized clinically and have distinct histopathologic features.

4. Ocular rosacea
Blepharitis and conjunctivitis are the most common findings in rosacea patients with ocular manifestations. Inflammation of the lids with recurrent chalazion and inflammation of the meibomian glands may be present. Interpalpebral conjunctival hyperemia, conjunctival telangiectases, and watery or dry, irritated eyes can occur. Burning or stinging, itching, light sensitivity, and a foreign body sensation are frequent symptoms in the patient with ocular rosacea. Keratitis, scleritis, iritis, and complications of such involvement are infrequent but can occur.

What is Mivaso:

Mirvaso is a new treatment released by Galderma in August/September 2013.  It is a temporary fix for facial redness.


MIRVASO (brimonidine) topical gel, 0.33% is an alpha adrenergic agonist indicated for the topical treatment of persistent (nontransient) erythema of rosacea in adults 18 years of age or older.

Deficiencies can be noticed in terms of increased anxiety, tremulousness, worry, loss of order, loss of stability, and a sense of uncertainty. Too much GABA is associated with excessive caretaking, subjugation, and enabling behaviors.

SEROTONIN—is considered one of the most complex neurotransmitters as it plays many roles in the central nervous system. Produced in the occipital lobes, this neurotransmitter is associated with re-synchronizing your brain so that every morning you wake up feeling refreshed and rested. It is a key neurotransmitter for emotional stability and “feeling good.”

Dominance in serotonin is associated with playfulness, easy going attitude, optimism, joy, spontaneity, and serenity. Imbalances are associated with certain mood disorders, especially depression. In the early stages, deficiencies can be noticed in terms of sleep difficulties, loss of

Circle the highest number. This is your most deficient nature, and is the one which is most likely to lead to illness. Your deficient nature can be the same or different to your dominant nature. In fact, you’ll most likely realize deficits to your dominant nature sooner than you would recognize deficits to other aspects of your biochemistry, simply because you are used to behaving and feeling a specific way. Often, you burn out your edge just by being yourself. For example, dopamine natures often push themselves too hard at work and burn out their edge. Serotonin natures are known to overindulge, especially with alcohol, which would also lead to a biochemical imbalance. When GABA natures don’t get enough sleep, they create problems for themselves as well.

Any category with between 3 and 5 true statements is considered a minor deficiency. Any category with between 6 and 8 true statements is considered a moderate deficiency. If you have more than 9 true statements in any one category, it is considered a major deficiency. If you have 15 or more true statements in any one category, you need to get help immediately.

Minor deficits are the early warning signs of health problems. If ignored, they will eventually lead to more serious deficiencies, ultimately affecting your dominant nature, even if they occurred in another nature. If you fell into the moderate deficit range, you probably have already sought medical treatment for any number of ailments. Minor and moderate deficits can be treated without medications and usually respond to a combination of natural/nutritional, hormonal and life-style changes.

Major deficits warrant medical treatment and should be addressed immediately. These deficits are treated as diseases, i.e. Parkinson’s disease, severe mood disorders, high blood pressure, memory loss, seizure disorder, depression, learning disability, attention deficit disorder, migraines, sleep disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, manic depression, anxiety, among others. These conditions most likely require mediations: nutritional, hormonal and/or life-style changes will not be adequate in addressing these problems.
